CLEAN YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

Here is an overview of the various components of your gutter system and how they work to protect your home.Denver Gutter Cleaning - Person cleans the leaves from the gutter putting them in bucket during Autumn

  • Rain Gutters:  These are the main catchall for rain water and snow melting off the roof.  The gutters are hung at a slight degree of slope to divert the flow of water towards the downspouts.

  • Downspouts:  These are the long tubes, often at the corners of a house, that extend from the roof to the ground.  The downspouts carry the water from the gutters to the ground.  If the downspouts are clogged, the entire gutter system will not work properly and the rain water will pour over the edge of the gutters.

  • Extensions:  This is a piece that fits onto the end of the downspout and extends at least 5 feet from the house.  It is usually made of metal  or plastic.  This is an extremely important piece of the gutter system and one that is often times missing or has been stepped on (run over with a lawn mower, kicked out of place, etc.) and is not working properly.  Without the extension, your downspouts are dumping the water directly next to the house and the foundation.  Over time, this can cause severe damage to your home.  Many cities with older  Victorian and Bungalow style homes such as DenverBoulder, and Longmont have seen severe shifting in their foundations do to the neglect of gutter cleaning and poor drainage.

  • Splash Block:  This is a cement block placed at the end of the extension to help keep the water from eroding the landscape.

  • Underground Drains and French Drains:  There are applications where the downspouts go into underground drains which will lead the water away from the house.  These underground pipes can be open on the end letting the water flow out into the yard or they can  run into an underground rock reservoir and have no exit.  Unfortunately, these underground drains do get clogged with debris such as leaves, dirt, or even plant roots that will take root in the drain and begin to grow.  It is important to have these drains cleaned on a regular basis.  If the debris builds up to such an extent that water cannot pass through, these lines may have to be dug up and redone or  installed as an above ground drain system.

  • Leaf Screens / Gutter Guards:   These can be installed over the gutter to help prevent debris in the gutter system.  They allow water to flow through, but stop leaves and debris from accumulating in the gutters.  Screens and guards have their pros and cons.  Please ask if you would like more information on these products.  Denver Gutter Cleaning does install leaf screens and gutter guards.
